The Columbus Grove branch of the Putnam County District Library experienced numerous relocations before settling at its present location. Initially, from 1936 to 1953, the library was situated in various premises, including the Grove Dry Cleaning establishment on High Street and the Girl Scout Headquarters, located on the upper level of the Maple building. Glenna Nusbaum had the distinction of serving as the inaugural librarian during this period.

Subsequently, from 1953 to 1963, the library found a temporary home within the township building situated on West Sycamore Street. In a continued quest for a suitable location, the library transitioned in 1963 to premises formerly occupied by Baer’s Shoe Store, also located on West Sycamore Street. This relocation was followed by another move in 1972 to the Northwest Fuel Injection building, where it remained until 1979.

The pursuit for a permanent location culminated on December 22, 1978, when the Columbus Grove location of the Putnam County District Library was relocated to its current address at 317 North Main Street. This significant milestone was celebrated with an open house event on April 29, 1979, marking a new chapter in the library's history. The librarian at this time was Judy Schroeder.

In 1972, the Columbus Grove location initiated the formation of the "Friends of the Columbus Grove Library". This organization demonstrated remarkable community engagement. The Friends group contributed significantly to their local library, notably organizing annual craft shows and playing a pivotal role in funding the 1986 addition to the Columbus Grove Library building. The final addition to the Columbus Grove Library, a computer and magazine area, was completed in 1998. The Friends of the Columbus Grove Library remained an integral part of the library until 2015 when they disbanded.
