The Kalida-Union Township branch of the Putnam County District Library was established in the municipal building in 1973. The branch inauguration attracted 163 attendees on April 8, 1973, indicating a significant community interest in the library's offerings. Nancy Croy was the first staff member to serve at this branch.

To facilitate the library's setup, the Kalida Lions Club contributed to the funding for shelving, essential for housing an initial collection of around 4,500 volumes. This effort helped establish a valuable resource of knowledge for public access.

A noteworthy development in the branch's history occurred in 2011 when the Kalida Local Schools proposed the library's relocation to the School Administration building. This move was aimed at improving access for school children and the broader community. The relocation not only provided a larger space but also included a special room for children, emphasizing the library's dedication to nurturing young readers. The Branch Coordinator, instrumental in coordinating the move to the new location, was Ruth Hermiller who served as librarian from 1988 to 2016.

The official opening of the library at its new location took place on October 9, 2011. This event signified a fresh phase in the library's service to the community, with enhanced facilities and resources to support educational and informational needs. The move to the Kalida School Administration building effectively doubled the branch's available space and positioned it as a central point for learning and community engagement.
